Miagao readies for Salakayan '09

MIAGAO, Iloilo-The Municipality of Miagao is making ready for the celebration for the town's 293rd Founding Anniversary and Salakayan Festival 2009 slated on February 8-15, this year bannering the theme "Katampad, Kapisan, Kaisog: Sadsaran sang Mapag-on nga Pagtuo kag Pagserbisyo." 
 
The week-long celebration will be opened on February 8 with the opening of the Food Festival at the plaza.  Thereafter, the municipal plaza is expected to become the busiest place in the municipality as it will become the venue of almost all activities  that will help spice up the celebration that includes sports competition, alumni reunions and nightly socials, to name a few.
 
The Festival highlights shall be on the final three days of the week namely: Thanksgiving Mass, Fluvial Parade, Grand Parade, and barangay Night on February 13; Tribes' Contest, Merry Making, and Tribes' Night on February 14; and Higantes' Presentation and Coronation of the Queen of Miagao '09 on February 15.
 
Five competing tribes will vie for the Salakayan tribe's competition trophy by showcasing their colorful interpretation of the late 18th century history of the founding of the pueblo of Miagao with Barangay Tacas as its seat of power.  The story likewise tells the building of the now world famous Miagao Church in 1786 on the hill called Tacas which offered a good vantage view of the coming of the moro marauders either through the sea or the river.  Tribu Kabugwason of Miagao National High School, Bantalaan of San Rafael National High School, Tabun-ak of Palaca-Damilisan National High School,  Salagyawan of Alejandro Firmeza Memorial National High School and  Kirayanon of Kirayan National High School are the five competing tribes.
 
On Sunday (February 15th), higantes will dominate the main streets of the poblacion with a theatrical presentation of "Prinsepeng Duwag ", with no less than higantes as main characters  and the coronation of the Queen of Miagao 2009.
 
The Coronation of the Queen of Miagao culminates the weeklong festivities.  To be crowned Queen of Miagao is 15 year-old statuesque Mary May Nicolasora of Barangay Mat-y.
  
The coronation program will be highlighted by a dance-of-honor dubbed "Rigodon de Hablon" to be rendered by 36 prominent Miagaowanon couples, led by Mayor Julieta N. Flores and General Gerardo N. Flores, will showcase the town's hablon and patadyong fabrics made into elegant terno and barong.
 
The week-long celebration is being celebrated annually in order to promote the town's tourism potentials, preserve and enrich the local culture, encourage entrepreneurship and foster economic prosperity. 
 
The festivities are aggregately rooted in the enlivening of the town's history against a backdrop of outstanding natural, man-made and intangible heritage. 
 
Meanwhile, Mayor Julieta N. Flores expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Department of Tourism and the Provincial Government of Iloilo for their generosity which will make a long way in making the festival fun and memorable for the Miagaowanons.
