UPV Miagao sky lantern LIGHT FOR PEACE
LIGHT FOR PEACE— A total of 15,185 sky lanterns are flown from the football field of University of the Philippines Visayas in Miagao, Iloilo. The May 24th event set a new Guinness World Record for the most number of sky lanterns flown and was also a campaign for world peace. (Tara Yap)

More than 15,000 sky lanterns are released within 10 minutes Friday night at the University of the Philippines Visayas campus in Miag-ao town in Iloilo to call for world peace by cultivating inner peace.

Salakayan tribe performance to highlight Miagao's founding day
ILOILO CITY, Jan 31 (PIA) -- The performance of Tribu Salakayan, the 2013 Kasadyahan Festival Regional Cultural Competition champion, will highlight the celebration of the 297th Foundation Anniversary of Miagao, Iloilo.
The Grand Parade of the Salakayan Festival will be on February 9, said Edison Molanida, Miagao Municipal tourism officer.
Molanida said the town’s local government unit has laid-out several activities for this event with the theme “Saulugon: Dugong Miagaowanon.” It will officially kick off on Feb. 2 with the opening of the food fair in the town plaza.
“The celebration of the foundation anniversary is slated on February 2-10. The festival’s opening salvo will take place on Feb. 4, simultaneously starting with the Agro-Trade Fair where the town’s agricultural and fishery products will be showcased,” Molanida said.
The Municipal Tourism Officer also said that six tribes will be participating in this year’s Salakayan Tribe Contest namely Tribu Tabun-ak, Tribu Tabuk-Tabuk, Tribu Buklod, Tribu Bantala-an, Tribu Kirayanon and Tribu Salagyawan. These tribes are supported by the different public schools, barangays, associations, and other sectors in the municipality.
“The newly renovated Justice Ramon B. Britanico Hall will be inaugurated in the afternoon of Feb. 10 and in the evening, the festival will be capped with the coronation of the Queen of Miagao” added Molanida. (JCM/LTP/PIA-ILOILO)

Should we still get married?

Dear Tita,
Two years ago my husband died of a massive stroke at the age of 68. I was devastated over his death and it took me almost a year before I could function normally again. Last year I happened to come across Ben, an old suitor of mine in college. He told me he was now a widower and a retiree. We got to talking about the good old days when we were both young and carefree. When he learned that I had also retired as a teacher, he immediately invited me to see his place in Miag-ao, Iloilo where he had planted beautiful flowers and plants in his wide garden. He knew how I loved plants and flowers and so I readily agreed. When I got there, I was surprised to see that his wife’s older sister Ana, an old maid at 75, was also living there. Ben told me that Ana was all alone and had no place to go so he let her stay in his house. I enjoyed my short visit at Ben’s place.
When I got back here, Ben would call or text me several times a day. He would also come on weekends to visit. It wasn’t long before he told me that when he saw me again after all these years, he realized that he never stopped loving me. He asked me to marry him and stay with him in Miag-ao. When I asked him about Ana, he said she can still stay with us as she was too old to move away. I have not given him my answer because I have misgivings about marrying him. People might laugh at us, marrying when we are both 67 years old. (Too old, don’t you think?).Fortunately, we both don’t have any children to consider. But I don’t like the idea of having Ana stay with us. Please advise me what to do.

Why worry about what other people may think about you both getting married again at 67? They aren’t the ones living your lives – you are. At your age, I should think you are long past caring what other people think. If you love Ben as much as he loves you, then I say, go for it! Enjoy the few years you have left in this world. Fate has decreed that you find each other again after all these years. Don’t waste the moments pondering over what other people think. Regarding Ana, why don’t you give her a chance? You can let her stay with you and Ben and who knows? You might like her and find her a big help in caring for your garden. If not, then you and Ben could discuss this later and decide. Good luck!

3rd Friday of October as COOPERATIVE DAY in MIAGAO
This year's Cooperative Day is on October 21 as per Municipal Ordinace No. 07-2009 declaring 3rd Friday of October as COOPERATIVE DAY in MIAGAO.
The purpose of enactment are as follows:
1. To raise consciousness of the people to join the cooperative movement and uphold the principles and values of cooperativism.
2. To create public awareness about the sector’s modest contribution in the area of development.
3. To open opportunity in indoctrinating the value of unity and participation among stakeholders and discuss ways and means to further the growth and development of cooperatives.
4. To provide a venue of interaction and sharing of success stories with other cooperatives through the Principles of Cooperation among Cooperatives.
5. To provide a system for advocating policies in creating an environment conducive to the growth and development of cooperatives.
6. An venue to discover the potentials of cooperative members and officers as well as students particularly the intellectual capacity about the ideology of cooperativism, entrepreneurship, leadership, and other related fields in achieving effective and efficient operation and management of cooperatives as a business and social enterprises
7. To gather stakeholders and create a venue to renew their commitment and support through internalizing the ideology of cooperativism in achieving social change.
