ILOILO CITY, February 7 (PIA) --- The Salakayan tribes competition on February 8, 2014 will highlight the week-long celebration of the 298th foundation anniversary of the municipality of Miagao.
The town’s local government unit, under the leadership of municipal mayor Macario Napulan, has laid out several activities for this year’s Salakayan Festival which officially kicked off Saturday with the Opening Salvo and Higantes Parade.

The Miagao Municipal Tourism Office said that seven tribes will be participating in this year’s tribes contest namely Tribu Bantala-an, Tribu Buklod, Tribu Kabugwason, Tribu Kirayanon, Tribu Salagyawan, Tribu Tabuk-Tabuk, and Tribu Tabun-ak.

These tribes come from seven public secondary schools in the municipality and are supported by the town’s 119 barangays and 32 public elementary schools.

Aside from the tribes contest, one of the major activities set is the Hablon Fashion Show slated Friday that will feature creations of national designer Nono Palmos and other local designers.
The hablon handloom-weaving is a major industry in this municipality. The hablon fabric has emerged into a versatile and unique textile that has made waves in the Philippines and in international haute couture.
The Salakayan, coined from a Hiligaynon term “salakay” or “to attack”, is a street dance-drama that merges arts, lore and customs of the town.

This year’s festival activities are anchored on the theme “Miagao Sa Pagbag-o, Pabaskugon ang Pagtuo, Ekonomiya kag Turismo”. (JCM/LTP/PIA-Iloilo)
